Kohe Lepe Lepe

Do you know the origins of Koko Head? I learned this in my Hawaiian Studies College course that every student has to take at UH. It was quite an interesting story as it come from mythology and had to do with sex, as all good stories do.

The name Koko Head originates from the Hawaiian name Kohe Lepe Lepe which means "flying vagina." Apparently Pele (the goddess of volcano and fire) was really mad at her sister Nā-maka-o-Kahaʻi (the goddess of the sea) not only for their ongoing battle, but also for stealing her boyfriend as well. As Pele and Nā-maka-o-Kahaʻi fight, they create the land on which we live and thrive while Pele erupts fire and lava from her home the volcano, her sister constantly meets her fire with the ocean, cooling and hardening the liquid magma into rock. But that is not the only thing for which the two compete. Pele's sister was having an affair with Kamapua'a (Pele's lover) and Pele found out. So Pele immediately tracked the two while they were sleeping together and ripped off her sister's vagina then flung it across the island. It landed it what we call Hawaii Kai today near Sandy's beach, thus creating the term "flying vagina".  And, of course, because Kamapua'a is a man, he went chasing after the kohe lepe lepe  with no qualms or hesitation.

If you fligh over Koko Head Crater today and look down from the top, you tell me what shape you see.
